If the valve stem becomes damaged, air will leak out. This can be a major safety issue for you and other drivers if your tire goes flat while you're driving. Replacing the valve stem yourself takes 15 minutes and saves you money. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Valve stem tool Bead breaker Rubber mallet Dish-washing soap Tire Iron New valve stem Water Step by Step : 1 Remove the core from the tire stem with a valve stem tool. Turn it counterclockwise. If there is still air in the tire, be careful not to lose the core as you remove it from the stem. Let the tire deflate. 2 Place the bead breaker between the tire and the rim in the area of the valve stem. Using a rubber mallet, drive the bead breaker downward until you hear popping sounds and the tire sidewall separates from the wheel rim. 3 Push the tire down to access the inside of the wheel. Remove the old valve stem. Replace it with a new one by pulling the new one through the wheel from the inside with the valve stem tool. 4 Remove the core of the new valve stem by turning it counterclockwise with the valve stem tool. 5 Inflate the tire and reinsert the core with the valve stem tool. 6 Drip small amounts of water around the valve stem to check for leaks.

Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Jack Wheel wrench Spare tire Owner's manual Step by Step : 1 Remove the spare tire, jack and wheel wrench from the trunk. 2 Pull off the wheel cover or the center cap from the flat tire. Use the flat end of the wheel wrench to pry the cover or cap off. 3 Loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire with the wheel wrench. The nuts should only be loose at this point. 4 Position the jack under the frame closest to the tire you are changing. There is an indention in the metal frame into which the jack head will fit. 5 Raise the Stratus with the jack. Turn the jack handle until the car is high enough to easily slide the tire on and off the wheel. 6 Unscrew and remove the lug nuts. 7 Slide the old tire off of the wheel. 8 Position the spare or new tire onto the wheel and slide it on. 9 Screw the lug nuts onto the spare or new tire. Do this by hand. Step by Step : 10 Turn the jack handle to lower the Stratus back to the ground. Step by Step : 11 Tighten the nuts with the wheel wrench.
